Verbal Sketching, Image Sketching, Imagination: Reima Pietilä and The Creative Process of Architecture
Architect and academician Reima Pietilä (1923–1993) is known in the field of Finnish and international architecture as an exceptional figure by virtue of his significant architectural output, theoretical and philosophical writings, and teaching. He was a keen debater whose works and texts were widely noted and often spawned controversy. An important partner in Pietilä’s design work was his wife Raili Pietilä (1926–2021).
Published on the centenary of Reima Pietilä’s birth, this book focuses on Pietilä’s architectural philosophy and his distinctive multidimensional design process. The six expert essays open up new perspectives on various aspects of Pietilä’s creative work. Also featured in the book are five articles by Reima Pietilä himself. One of them, “Nature: A Cultural Paradigm in Architecture”, is a previously unpublished manuscript translated into Finnish for this volume. The book presents sketches by Pietilä as well as his aphoristic statements about architecture which describe the design process and illustrate the results that eventually emerged from the initial ideas.
