Architecture Walking Tours: Historical Helsinki

During the architecture walk, you will learn about Finland’s history, key figures, building materials, and techniques that have shaped Helsinki into the city it is today. Throughout the walk, we will explore magnificent buildings that define Helsinki and reflect its rich history.

The walk starts at the Museum of Finnish Architecture (Kasarmikatu 24, 00130 Helsinki) and ends at the last destination, Helsinki Central Railway Station (Kaivokatu 1, 00100 Helsinki). The duration of the walk is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. 

The architecture walk is written by Gayle McKeen, Ph.D. in political science. The architecture walks are guided by the expert guides of the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum.

Please note that the Museum Card cannot be used to pay for the walking tour.

  • Students, pensioner and job seekers 5 €
  • Members of DAMY – the Friends of Design Museum and the Museum of Finnish Architecture 5 €
  • Children under 18 years old 0 €
  • The museum card is not accepted as a means of payment at the architecture walking tours.

A total of 25 participants are accepted for the architecture walk. Places are filled in order of arrival. The fee is paid before the start of the architecture walk at the customer service desk of the Museum of Finnish Architecture.

The walking tour takes place in urban public space and lasts about 2 hours. The total length of the route is about 3–4 kilometers. During the tour, stairs and unnecessary steps are avoided. Along the route there are non-beveled curbs and, in some places, uneven terrain with height differences. On the walking tour, the progression is calm and includes several stops. There are no easily accessible seats or benches along the route. You can bring your own camping chair. The nearest accessible public and gender-neutral toilet is located at the Museum of Finnish Architecture (Kasarmikatu 23, 00130 Helsinki).
