Architecture Walk Series: Polished Pearls and Oiled Mechanisms – Care and Repair in Urban Spaces

Location: Muualla

What layers are hidden in the evolving urban space? What solutions and choices are made when preserving or demolishing buildings? How is the built environment maintained, repaired, and cared for?

On this architecture walk, we will explore Helsinki city centre from the perspectives of care and repair. The tour will cover current infrastructure projects in the city centre as well as landmark sites that have undergone extensive renovation or changes in use.

The architecture walk begins at Museum of Finnish Architecture (Kasarmikatu 24, 00130 Helsinki) and ends at Kaisaniemi park (00100 Helsinki). The duration of the walk is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

The architecture walk is part of the FIX: Care and Repair exhibition programme. The script for the walk was written by Petteri Kummala, Head of Research at the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum. The architecture walks are guided by the expert guides of the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum.

Accessibility

Architecture walk starts at
Museum of Finnish Architecture (Kasarmikatu 24, 00130 Helsinki)

Architecture walk ends at
Kaisaniemi park (00100 Helsinki)

The duration of the walk is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. The total length of the route is about 2 kilometers. The guide uses a microphone to make hearing easier.

The walk takes place in a public urban space, where there are occasional strong stimuli, such as large groups of people, heavy traffic, street dust, noise or strong smells. There are few shaded places along the outdoor route. Along the route, there are uneven pavement edges, cobblestones and in some places uneven terrain with differences in height. The route includes narrow passages and short stretches of dirt road.

During the walk, we will mainly walk outdoors, but along the route we will also walk indoors. Along the indoor route, there are a total of three staircases with approximately 6–8 steps. The guides are ready to assist in finding a more barrier-free route indoors, for example to avoid stairs. During the walk, the progress is calm and includes several stops. There are no easily accessible seats or benches along the route. You can bring your own hiking chair if you wish.

For the walk, it is recommended to prepare yourself with weather-appropriate equipment. In sunny and hot weather, you should bring your own water bottle and protect yourself from the sun.

The nearest public, accessible, and gender-neutral WC is located at the starting point of the route at the Museum of Finnish Architecture (Kasarmikatu 24, 00130 Helsinki).

The Museum of Finnish Architecture is not accessible. More information about the museum’s accessibility can be found via this link. The Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum adhere to safer space principles in all their activities. FIX: Care and Repair

FIX: Care and Repair In April 2024, renovation, maintenance, and cleaning will take over the exhibition halls of the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum. FIX: Care and Repair brings together architecture, design, and contemporary art. The exhibition draws attention to the repair of objects and buildings, the maintenance of the environment, and the aesthetics of dirt and wear. In the exhibition, museums appear as places of care, where collection care and conservation maintain a carefully selected inventory.

FIX: Care and Repair is open at the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum from 26 April to 31 December 2024. The exhibition is curated by a team from the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum.
