LET’S BUILD A CITY! CHILDREN'S OPERA AND EXHIBITION

The Museum of Finnish Architecture will host the March 3rd premiere of Let’s Build a City, an architectural opera for kids. The twelve performances will be accompanied by educational workshops, teaching material and global studios where children around the world will use music as a tool in designing their own concert halls. A related exhibition will be staged at the museum for the duration of the performances. The project is a co-production of the Museum of Finnish Architecture and is part of the Helsinki World Design Capital programme.

Wir Bauen eine Stadt (We’re Building a City) is a children’s opera originally composed by Paul Hindemith in 1930. This is the first Finnish rendition seen since 1934, when it was performed by a child choir in the now Russian town of Viipuri. Playing the lead in this new version is the city of Helsinki in the year 2062, prompting the audience to consider what might constitute a “great city to live in” in fifty years from now. The children taking part in the workshops will be invited to explore their own urban identity and generate ideas for a better city of the future.

Let’s Build a City! is an unique educational project in which both the artists and audience are mostly children. The performers, set designers and costume designers are all fourth-graders from Kaisaniemi Lower Comprehensive School. Weaving together architecture, classical music and the performing arts, Let’s Build a City is an experience for all the senses. It also explores pedagogical questions related to music, architecture and our environment from a learner-oriented perspective.

All weekday performances are fully booked by visiting school groups.

The public is invited to the opera and workshops on March 17th. Shows start at 1.00 pm and 2:00 pm and last approximately 30 minutes. The workshops begin at noon and 12.30 pm.
