EXHIBITION: FINNISH ARCHITECTURE 0809

The summer exhibition 2010 at the Museum of Finnish Architecture displayed a number of future classics – a selection of works by Finnish architects from 2008 and 2009. While the works represent different approaches and various architectural languages, they share a carefully considered relation to context in terms of culture, time and place. Included are buildings for living, office work, day care, education, culture and production, and urban schemes. After the presentation in Helsinki the exhibition tours internationally.

The exhibition is accompanied by a book published in English, Finnish Architeture 0809, which in addition to project presentations includes writings from experts and persons interested in architecture as well as catalogues of events. The writers are Heikki Aitoaho, Selina Anttinen and Johan Celsing (selectors of the works displayed), Peter MacKeith (architect, USA), Matti Kalliokoski (editor of the Ilkka newspaper) Tomi Kontio (poet and writer). For sale at the museum bookshop starting from 8 June for EUR 25.

The biennial surveys of Finnish architecture were started in 2004, the current survey being the fourth. This time the jury consisted of architects Selina Anttinen (chair), Heikki Aitoaho and Johan Celsing (Sweden), with Tapio Aho, M.Sc. Tech., as counselling advisor. The organisers of the biennial surveys are the Alvar Aalto Academy, the Finnish Association of Architects SAFA and the Museum of Finnish Architecture.

MARIA
They rise out of the forest like enormous white teeth, with nothing natural about them. Yet they seem to grow as the sun goes down and casts a wedge of light on their sides. Inside the sand and cement, the steel arteries recall for a moment the forges of their youth, and the quartz of the windows absorbs the silhouettes of the pine tree tops into its cold mirrors. Behind the glass live flesh and fear. Over there is my window, my room, my family. That’s my ghost drifting from kitchen to living room, saying, doing, wanting. Food for children, flesh for husband, images for me. The involuntary organ of my heart pumps blood into my veins, letters and words of blood, absurd sentences of blood into my brain, lungs, kidneys, liver and the exclamation mark between my legs. I spend my nights in a tooth that bites a hole in the sky.
