ALVAR AALTO MEDAL 50TH ANNIVERSARY

The Museum of Finnish Architecture’s main autumn exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary and the winners of the international architecture prize bearing Alvar Aalto’s name. Over the past 50 years, the Alvar Aalto Medal has been awarded to accomplished architects from 10 countries, and in 2017, handed over for the 13th time. Read more »


ARCTIC DREAMS – ARCHITECTURE FOR TOURISTS IN LAPLAND, 1930–1950

Through the ages Lapland has been a centre of myths and legends; a strangely alluring Ultima Thule. For a long time the area was known mainly through the stories brought back by explorers and adventurers. It was not until the early 1900s, as infrastructure improved, that tourism as such to Lapland began. Read more »

The exhibition takes its visitors on a journey into the Finnish architecture of the 20th century. Different features, technical solutions, materials and interior design are followed from decade to decade; from National Romanticism to Classicism and Functionalism, through the Modernism that created the country’s international reputation to the architecture of the 1970's.
