HISTORY OF FINNISH ARCHITECTURE LECTURE SERIES
(ARK-C1005 short course, credits: 1–3)

This short lecture course is an introductory package of the history of Finnish architecture, from the vernacular wooden houses to the hi-tech architecture of the 1990s, what was built, when and why? The aim is to become more aware of the architecture you encounter in, for instance, Helsinki, and to understand how building and architecture are interconnected with the general development of Finnish culture and society.
The lectures will be held at the Museum of Finnish Architecture and can be attended to earn credits (1–3 cr) – or simply to learn more about Finnish architecture. Course leader Netta Böök, architect (MSc)
Lectures are open to all museum visitors with entrance ticket. The students of Aalto University and University of Helsinki can enter simply by showing the student card at the ticket counter.
Tuesday 10th, 6–7:45 p.m.
Main characteristics of historical Finnish architecture. Vernacular building. Periods and monuments –1809
Wednesday 11th, 6–7:45 p.m.
The Finnish wooden town. Finnish 19th century architecture. Helsinki from the 17th to 20th century
Thursday 12th, 2–4 p.m.
Walking tour in the historical centre of Helsinki. Meeting at Senate Square at 2 pm.
Tuesday 17th, 6–7:45 p.m.
Finnish architecture from around 1900 to the 1940´s. National Romanticism, the Classicism of the 1920´s, Finnish Functionalism
Note: If you wish to attend a short introduction tour at the museum premises, please arrive at 5:30pm
Wednesday 18th, 6–7:45 p.m.
Finnish architecture after World War II. The Golden Age of the 1950´s, the boom of the 1960´s; tendencies by the turn of the century
Thursday 19th, appr. 12–4 p.m.
Alvar Aalto excursion.
–Starting at 12. in front of the Academic Bookstore (Akateeminen kirjakauppa, Pohjoisesplanadi 39) a brief look at Rautatalo, then commuting to KELA Hadquarters (Nordenskiöldinkatu 12, at 13:30)
–Later in the afternoon a visit to the Aalto House, Riihitie 20. Be prepared to pay for 1 entrance ticket (appr. 18 €) and 2-3 tram tickets. Take your student card with you, or, if you are a member of ICOMOS or ICOM, take the membership card.
